My current series of proxy self-portraits takes the form of screenshots of music I’m listening to on my phone following a simple set of rules: each must include a musician I identify with, and the song must have personal resonance or an autobiographical allusion. The result is a portrait of the musician and a self-portrait. Portraiture links this series with my own portfolio and the history of European portrait painting.
Dates, times, battery power and other information in the painting are symbolic and literal, totally specific yet utterly generic, underscored by Untitled in every title. These signs, along with the album cover, song title, etc. attain new personal significance. All paintings in this series reference specific events in my life.
