Opening Reception Thursday June 6, 6-12pm

Looking is never “innocent.” Every glance carries with it our fears, hopes, prejudices and desires. Seeing is the primary way we relate to the world. In the subways and on the streets we look at others, we see advertisements and a barrage of images on our smart phones. We long to satiate our desires, to substitute a material product for the spiritual within.

Through the mirror of an artwork, we enter the realm where we perhaps see ourselves. The job of the artist is to look within and to find those inner truths and give them form.

This is an exhibition about looking. It’s about looking at ourselves, looking at others and how that affects the way we see the world. It’s about looking at art and the complicated and complicit relationship that this creates between ourselves, the work and the artist. It’s about desire, frustration, transparency and opacity.

The artists in this exhibition were asked to respond to the subject of looking. This may take a personal, psychological, political or phenomenological form. Their works can be roughly divided into two categories: those which reveal and those which conceal, although in a sense all will do both.

In conjunction with the exhibition Kunsthalle Galapagos will host the following events:

June 18, 8pm

Reading and Writing about Looking

In tandem with On-Looking, a group exhibition at Kunsthalle Galapagos curated by Daniel Kingery, we are presenting a reading about writing about looking.

How do we write how we see? It's complicated! Join us for a zoetropic reading experience: each writer will read a three-minute excerpt describing an act of looking. Beer and wine will follow.

Organized by Emily Witt

Special 16mm screening of Andy Warhol’s Beauty #2 starring Edie Sedgewick, Gino Piserchio and Chuck Wein

A half-naked Edie Sedgewick and Gino Piserchio engage in intimate foreplay on a bed as Sedgewick is antagonized off-camera by Chuck Wein. The viewer is involved in a complicit relationship of voyeurism and abuse as Sedgewick counters Wein and is simultaneously an object of desire.

Based in spirit on the collaborative and experimental Kunsthalle model found in Europe, Kunsthalle Galapagos is run and curated by a group of volunteer artists and curators.  We are a multi-disciplinary artist-centric space that exhibits new work and provides artists the opportunity to create outside the boundaries of commercial concerns. We showcase emerging and established artists, both local and international, who actively challenge convention.
